Tiff, this is a riff on (1) those ludicrous Jim Wallis “God is not a Republican or a Democrat” bumper stickers and (2) the intolerable practice of NRSV-types of engaging in linguistic infelicities like “God does all of this Godself” in order to avoid referring to the First Person of the Trinity with a gendered pronoun. (Indeed, the latter issue seems to be moot as long as we’re still saying “Our Father….”) Either conceit provides much worthy material for many polemical postings, but neither represents a toaster into which I’d particularly like to stick my fork.
btw, we should discuss pastry (i.e. yours is excellent) and, ideally, burgers/fries (i.e. I owe you & J some of each) offline.
