ICFP contest entry in assembly language (!)

I was browsing some of the links to compiler infrastructures, intermediate representations, and other things I’ve read and mostly forgotten over the last few years (to add to the research compilers and tools page), when I came across an extremely cute ICFP contest entry. (The ICFP contest is a programming contest to solve what is generally a very difficult problem in your choice of languages. There are two divisions: a 72-hour division and a 24-hour “lighting” division.) The Typed Assembly Language gang at Cornell wrote their 1999 entry in — can you guess? — typed assembly language! Here is their writeup, which will be extremely amusing if you’re a PL nerd.

I’m currently listening to Vorspiel from the album “Das Rheingold” by Wiener Philharmoniker – Solti
